What is XLPE Cable?
XLPE cable is essentially an “upgraded version of plastic cable.”
Ordinary cables use polyethylene (PE) for insulation, but this material has a fatal flaw: it’s sensitive to heat. Even a slight touch of heat will cause it to soften like noodles.
The “X” in XLPE stands for “cross-linked.” Simply put, it’s like using chemical methods to create “welds” between the polyethylene molecules, locking the molecular chains together into a strong network.
This increased strength results in three main advantages:
- Exceptional heat resistance: Ordinary cables reach their maximum heat resistance at 70 degrees Celsius, while XLPE can withstand 90 degrees Celsius, and even withstands a short circuit that can instantly spike to 250 degrees Celsius without melting.
- More durable: When transmitting current, the wire heats up. Because of its superior heat resistance, it can carry a larger current for the same thickness.
- Longer lifespan: This structure is less prone to aging, making it much more reliable than older cables when buried underground or installed in cable trays.
