Instrument Armoured Cable

What Is Instrument Armoured Cable?

You work in industrial plants. You deal with signals. These signals control machines. They send data to computers. But the plant is a rough place. There is moisture. There is heavy traffic. Rodents might chew wires. A normal cable will fail here. This is where instrument armoured cable comes in.

This cable protects the core wires. The core carries the signal. The armour protects the signal. It is like a shield. We make this cable for tough jobs. It ensures your system stays online. It stops expensive downtime.

Why Use Armoured Cable for Instruments?

You might ask, “Why not use a normal cable?” Normal cables are weak. They break easily. Armoured cables have a strong jacket. Here are the big benefits.

Mechanical Protection

Heavy trucks drive over cables. Tools fall on them. The armour layer takes the hit. It is usually steel wire or tape. It stops the crush damage. The wires inside stay safe.

Moisture and Chemical Resistance

Factories have water and oil. Chemical plants have acids. The outer sheath blocks these liquids. It is often PVC or PE. PE is very tough against chemicals. PVC is flexible. This keeps the copper dry. Dry copper works better.

Rodent Protection

Rats and termites love to bite cables. They cause short circuits. Steel armour is too hard to bite. It stops pests from killing your signal lines.

Earth Continuity

The armour acts as a ground wire. If there is a fault, the current goes to the ground. This keeps people safe. It also trips the breaker fast.

Technical Specifications You Must Know

Buying cable is hard if you do not know the specs. Here is a simple table. We use common industry standards like BS 5308 and IEC 60092.

ParameterDescriptionCommon Options

Temperature RangeWhere it can work safely-15°C to +70°C (PVC) or +90°C (XLPE)
CoresNumber of wires inside1 pair, 2 pair, 3 pair, etc.
Conductor Details

We mostly use copper. It has low resistance. Aluminum is cheaper but breaks easier. For instrumentation, stick to copper. The size matters too. It is measured in mm² or AWG. Common sizes are 1.5mm², 2.5mm², or 16 AWG.

Insulation Colors

We color code the wires. It helps you connect them right. Common pairs are Blue/White or Red/Green. We can print numbers on the sheath too. It makes installation fast.

SWA vs. STA: Which One to Pick?

You will see two main types. They are SWA and STA. They look different. They act different.

Steel Wire Armoured (SWA)

This is the heavy-duty king. It has round steel wires under the sheath. It is very strong. You use it outside. You bury it in the ground. It handles big pulling forces. It is great for long runs. But it is stiff. Hard to bend in tight corners.

Steel Tape Armoured (STA)

This uses flat steel strips. It is flexible. You can bend it easily. It is good for indoor use. Or in cable trays. It stops crushing well. But it is not as strong as SWA for underground digging. If you have lots of bends, pick STA.

Where Do We Use These Cables?

This cable goes where the action is. It is not for home wiring. It is for industry.

Oil and Gas Industry

Refineries are dangerous. Sparks cause fires. We use LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) sheath. It does not release toxic smoke if burned. The armour stops leaks from damaging wires.

Power Plants

There is high voltage noise. Instrument cables pick up noise. This messes up the data. We use shielded pairs. The shield blocks the noise. The armour blocks the physical impact.

Water Treatment Plants

It is wet here. Humidity is 100%. There is corrosion. We use PE sheath. PE does not rot in water. The steel wire is galvanized. It stops rust.

Building Automation

Big buildings have fire alarms. They have HVAC controls. These cables run in walls. They need to last 20 years. Armoured cable ensures the fire alarm works when you need it.

How to Choose the Right Vendor

You need a factory partner. Not just a trader. Here is what to check.

Check the Standards

Ask for the standard number. Is it BS 5308? Is it IEC 60332? If they do not know, walk away. These tests ensure the cable does not burn.

Sample Testing

Never buy a big order without a sample. Cut a piece. Check the copper. Is it bright? Or is it dirty scrap? Measure the thickness. Is the armour thick enough?

Production Speed

Projects have deadlines. Ask about lead time. A good factory makes fast. They keep raw material stock. Steel prices change fast. A good vendor locks prices for you.

Packing

Cables get damaged in shipping. Ask for wooden drums or steel reels. Plastic wrapping is not enough for sea freight.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even pros make mistakes. Do not let this happen to you.

Wrong Voltage Rating

Instrument cables are usually low voltage (300V/500V). Do not put 110V power on a signal cable. It will blow up. Keep power and signal separate.

Bad Bending

Armoured cable is heavy. If you bend it too sharp, the steel breaks. The minimum bend radius is 12 times the diameter. Do not kink it.

Poor Grounding

The armour must connect to the ground bar. If you do not ground it, it is just metal junk. It won’t protect you from shocks. Use proper cable glands.

Conclusion

Instrument armoured cable is tough. It protects your data. It saves money on repairs. You have two main choices: SWA for heavy strength, STA for flexibility. Always check the copper quality. Make sure it fits the environment. Use PE for wet areas. Use PVC for dry indoors.

We are a cable factory in China. We make these cables every day. We test them strictly. If you need a quote, send us your specs. We keep it simple. We keep it safe.
