4-Core 0.5mm² STP Cable | Industrial Cable Supplier

4-Core 0.5mm² STP Cable — Stable Signal Transmission Where Interference Costs You Money

A single ground loop or an under-screened cable run can corrupt sensor data, trigger nuisance trips, and stall an entire production shift. Not the kind of call a plant manager wants at 03:00. The 4-core 0.5 mm² STP cable is built to shut down that risk before it reaches the PLC. Each pair is shielded, each shield is drained to a common earth. The result: clean waveform delivery over long cable trays, even when routed alongside VFD motor feeds or high-current switchgear. For system integrators and panel builders, this means fewer callbacks and a bill of materials that actually matches as-built site conditions.

Conductor Metallurgy & Signal Consistency

Bare copper is standard. Tinned copper is an option worth specifying if your cables live in a hot, humid enclosure or an outdoor cabinet with condensation risk. Oxidation at the terminal block is a real failure mechanism. Tinning slows it down dramatically.
What you get: Every 0.5 mm² strand is drawn to a controlled elongation and resistance tolerance.
Why it matters on site: Stable end-to-end loop resistance keeps 4–20 mA analogue loops within calibration. Less drift over temperature cycles. Less time re-tuning PID loops after commissioning.

Braided Shield & Noise Rejection

STP stands for a braided screen — typically tinned copper wire — wrapped over the individual twisted pairs or over the full core assembly. Best practice for industrial RS-485 and CAN bus segments is one braid per pair, plus an overall drain wire.
Feature: ≥ 85 % optical braid coverage, consistent lay length, tinned drain wire integrated in each pair.
Advantage: High-frequency EMI (think contactor coils, inverter switching noise) gets shunted to ground before it can couple onto the signal line.
Direct project benefit: Reliable Modbus RTU communication at 115.2 kbit/s over 300+ metres without adding repeaters. That shortens the BOM and cuts commissioning hours.

Jacket Compounds for Real Plant Environments

PVC is the volume choice. It works. But if your cable trays run above a paint oven, or the installation crosses a fire compartment, the jacket material becomes a compliance question, not just a preference.
Standard PVC: Good chemical resistance to cutting oils, decent flexibility down to -5 °C fixed installation.
LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen): Specify this for tunnels, underground railway stations, hospitals, or any site where smoke opacity and acid gas release are life-safety issues.
PUR (Polyurethane): When the cable drags over grating, gets walked on, or faces regular washdowns, PUR outlasts PVC by a factor of 3. No jacket cracking after 100,000 flex cycles.

Compact Core Geometry & Easy Termination

A 4 × 0.5 mm² cable with individual pair screens ends up with an outer diameter around 5.5–7.0 mm depending on the jacket. That’s small enough to gland three cables into a standard M20 entry without violating IP66.
What it changes on the tools: The ferrules strip cleanly. The drain wire folds back without breaking. Panel wiring time drops because the colour code is printed every 15 mm — no chasing the cable to find the red or black trace. For prototype builds and high-mix panels, this is the difference between hitting a ship date and explaining a delay.

Industry Applications & Where This Cable Earns Its Keep

  • Factory automation & PLC I/O marshalling. Carries 24 V discrete signals, 4–20 mA loops, and RS-485 backbones from remote I/O islands back to the main PLC rack. The drain wire connects in seconds, never tags a neighbouring terminal.
  • Building management systems (BMS). Links BACnet MS/TP controllers across floors. LSZH jacket is mandatory in most commercial high-rise codes — we keep stock of the LSZH variant for exactly this reason.
  • Wind turbine pitch control & condition monitoring. Vibration, oil mist, and tight bend radii kill garden-variety signal cable inside a nacelle. When ordered with a PUR jacket and tinned conductors, this cable survives 5-year service intervals without signal degradation.
  • Water/wastewater SCADA. Chlorine rooms and sludge treatment areas demand chemical-resistant jackets and reliable data paths for flowmeters, DO sensors, and VSD feedback signals. We pre-cut, pre-label, and ship on heavy-duty reels that outdoor contractors can handle without tearing the jacket.
  • Test & measurement bench setups. A clean, flexible screened cable for connecting strain gauges, accelerometers, or thermocouple scanners to DAQ cards. Each pair’s foil screen breaks out neatly at the breakout board, keeping channel-to-channel crosstalk below 60 dB.

FAQ

1. I’m running Modbus RTU between a PLC and a VFD. What is the maximum reliable distance with this cable?
At 4-core 0.5 mm² with individual pair screens and proper termination (120 Ω at both ends), you can usually reach 350 metres at 19.2 kbit/s and 200 metres at 115.2 kbit/s without adding a repeater. Those numbers assume the cable is not bundled tightly with unfiltered motor cables over long parallel runs. In a real plant, keeping a 200 mm separation from three-phase power cables gives you a reliable noise margin. We always recommend a site acceptance test with a packet sniffer for critical servo drives.

2. Can you supply twisted pairs with a different impedance than 100–120 Ω?
Yes. Standard industrial RS-485 pairs sit around 100–110 Ω. For CANopen or DeviceNet segments we can adjust the lay length and dielectric to target 120 Ω ± 10 %. Please mention the target impedance and the physical layer standard (e.g., ISO 11898-2) on the RFQ. The engineering team usually needs 24 hours to confirm the design.

3. The cable will be dragged through a cable chain. What specifications do you need from me?
We need three data points: travel speed, bend radius (or chain minimum radius), and total flex cycles over the machine’s design life. From that we select the conductor stranding (VDE 0295 Class 5 or Class 6), the shield type (spiral vs braid), and whether a PUR jacket is mandatory. Our standard flexing-grade 4 × 0.5 mm² STP handles 4 million cycles at 12 × OD bend radius with PUR jacket. If you need a validation test report, we can include a flex test certificate from the jacket compound supplier.
